A wedding procession in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur turned violent after a groom was shot dead by unidentified assailants while travelling to his wedding venue. The victim, identified as Azad Bind, was attacked on Friday evening, May 1, while en route in a decorated car.

Family members said the attack came despite prior warnings of possible violence. The incident took place on National Highway 135-A, about five kilometres from the groom’s residence. According to eyewitnesses, two to three assailants on a motorcycle intercepted the vehicle. “They opened fire and ran away,” a witness inside the car said, adding that the attackers had covered their faces and concealed the vehicle’s number plate. At least three rounds were fired in quick succession.

Azad Bind was initially conscious after the shooting. A relative recalled his last words: “He was saying, ‘I won’t be able to save myself.’” He was rushed to a nearby hospital and later referred to a district facility, where doctors declared him dead. UP Wedding Turns Chaotic As First Wife Storms Husband’s Third Marriage in Sitapur, Thrashes Groom Before Police Intervene (Watch Video).

Police officials believe the killing was premeditated. Investigators said the accused were tracking the wedding procession and coordinating its location. Kunwar Singh, Superintendent of Police, said the attack was linked to opposition to the marriage from within the bride’s extended family.

Police have identified Pradeep Bind, a relative of the bride, as a key accused. He was allegedly opposed to the marriage and had issued threats prior to the incident. Ravi Yadav and Bhole Rajbhar have also been named. During questioning, the bride confirmed that objections had been raised by Pradeep before the wedding.

All three accused are currently absconding. Police have announced a reward of INR 25,000 for information leading to their arrest. Multiple teams have been formed to track down the suspects, and raids are being conducted in several locations. Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain order.

Investigators said Pradeep Bind has a criminal history and was previously involved in a contract killing case in 2025. He was reportedly out on bail at the time of the incident. Family members also alleged a history of disputes and threats involving the accused, pointing to earlier tensions.

A postmortem examination, conducted under security, confirmed multiple gunshot injuries. One bullet entered through the back and lodged in the chest, while another passed through the jaw.
