Mumbai, September 12: A 25-year-old driver has been booked by the Samta Nagar police for allegedly hitting and killing a dog with his car on September 12. The FIR was registered under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with mischief by killing or maiming an animal.
The FIR complaint was made by Nidhi Hegde, a 34-year-old lawyer from Lokhandwala Township, Kandivali East, who regularly feeds local dogs. Her acquaintance, Akshay Gangavane, informed Nidhi that a white car had hit one of the dogs she cares for. The incident, which happened on September 11 at 8:50 pm near Sapphire Heights outgate Junction, was reported by Gangavane, who also detained the driver. Upon arriving at the scene, Nidhi found a black dog lying on the ground. She quickly reached out to veterinarian Manish Garje, requesting him to come to the location. Garje arrived soon after, examined the dog, and confirmed its death. Nidhi recorded the car's registration number, MH 03 EG 0388, and discovered that the driver was Satyendra Rudral Vishwakarma. She then went to the Samta Nagar police station to file a complaint against Vishwakarma, which resulted in the registration of the FIR. In a similar incident, A Mumbai court recently convicted a 65-year-old man for killing a female dog by kicking it. Judge Ruchi Bhagat sentenced Kailash Singh under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960. The court fined Singh INR 30,000 and stipulated that failure to pay the fine would result in one month of simple imprisonment. The judgment was delivered on June 29.
