A 28-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur died by suicide after struggling with a long-term spinal illness, leaving behind an emotional handwritten note in which she expressed gratitude towards her husband and in-laws instead of blaming anyone. Police said the note suggests she was deeply distressed by her medical condition and believed she would not recover.

The deceased, identified as Nikki alias Vaishnavi, had been married to Shivam Shukla for around three years. According to police and family members, she had been undergoing treatment for a spinal disorder in Kanpur and Delhi. She is survived by her husband and their young son.

In her handwritten note, Nikki wrote that she was breaking her promise of staying with her family forever and requested them not to grieve. "You are blessed if you get such an in-law's family. Everyone took great care of me. Please don't be sad. I am taking this step out of helplessness," she wrote.

She also left instructions regarding some of her personal belongings. She asked that her scooter and jewellery be gifted to her younger brother-in-law's future bride, noting that the jewellery had been purchased with her father's money. She also requested that her mobile phone be given to her mother-in-law.

Family Says She Was Undergoing Treatment

According to relatives, Nikki had been receiving treatment for her illness for a considerable period. Her husband, Shivam Shukla, is employed with the Railways in Madhya Pradesh, and family members said they had ensured she received medical care throughout her illness.

Relatives also said Nikki had recently cleared the written stage of the Delhi Police recruitment examination and was preparing for the next phase. However, she had reportedly become increasingly concerned that her health condition might prevent her from qualifying.

Police Investigation Underway

Police from Rawatpur reached the residence after receiving information about the incident and sent the body for post-mortem examination. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dilip Singh said the contents of the note indicate that Nikki was distressed by her prolonged illness.

"The contents of the note indicate that she was upset because of her medical condition. Neither her parental family nor her in-laws have levelled any allegations against anyone. Further legal action will be taken after the postmortem report," the ACP said.

Her husband, Shivam, expressed shock over the incident. "My wife was my life. Even though she was ill, she was my companion. I don't know why she took this step. We would have continued her treatment," he said. Police said further action will be taken after the post-mortem report is received.
