Kanwar Yatra 2026: Delhi-Haridwar Highway To Close for Vehicles From August 4 to 12
Traffic restrictions for Kanwar Yatra 2026 will begin on the Delhi-Haridwar National Highway and Ganga Canal Road from July 30, with a complete ban on all vehicles from August 4 to 12. Police have also announced security measures, including exclusive routes for kanwariyas, deployment of police divers and a temporary police station.
Traffic restrictions will come into effect on the Delhi-Haridwar National Highway and the Ganga Canal Road from July 30 in view of the Kanwar Yatra 2026, with a complete ban on all types of vehicles on these routes from August 4 to August 12, police said on Monday. The annual pilgrimage will be held from July 30 to August 11, during which lakhs of devotees will travel to Haridwar to collect Ganga water for offering at Shiva temples.
Authorities have announced a detailed traffic management plan and additional security arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the yatra. A section of the Delhi-Haridwar National Highway will be reserved exclusively for kanwariyas during the pilgrimage. Traffic Restrictions from July 30
Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Atul Kumar Chaubey said heavy vehicles will not be allowed on the Delhi-Haridwar National Highway and the Ganga Canal Road from July 30.
To facilitate the movement of pilgrims, all types of vehicles will be prohibited on these routes from August 4 to August 12. Police said the restrictions are aimed at ensuring the safe and uninterrupted movement of kanwariyas during the annual pilgrimage.
Exclusive Route for Kanwariyas
According to officials, a section of the Delhi-Haridwar National Highway will be reserved exclusively for devotees participating in the Kanwar Yatra.
Every year, lakhs of kanwariyas travel to Haridwar to collect holy water from the Ganga and carry it back to their hometowns to offer at Shiva temples during the holy month.
District Magistrate Umesh Mishra said police divers will be deployed at all major bathing spots along the Ganga Canal Road to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
Meanwhile, a temporary police station has been established at Rampur Tiraha on the Delhi-Dehradun National Highway for the duration of the yatra.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjai Kumar said Sub-Inspector Subhash Chand has been appointed Station House Officer (SHO) of the temporary police station, where around 20 police personnel will be deployed.
Authorities have advised commuters to plan their journeys in advance and use alternate routes during the restriction period to avoid inconvenience.
