Bengaluru Sees Limited Impact
Unlike expectations of widespread disruption, normal activity continued across most parts of Bengaluru during the morning. Educational institutions remained open, while restaurants, eateries, shops and commercial establishments largely continued business. Public transport services, including Bengaluru Metro, KSRTC and private buses, were also running normally. Cabs and autorickshaws were available as well. The situation meant that daily life in the state capital was largely unaffected during the initial hours of the shutdown.
Partial Shutdown in Ramanagara

In Tumakuru, however, the response was reported to be low and normal activity continued. Reports from Mysuru and parts of the Malnad region also indicated a limited response, although some localised protests and closures were reported.
Vatal Nagaraj Detained
Meanwhile, police detained pro-Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj, one of the prominent figures backing the bandh. Police entered his residence in Bengaluru's Sanjaynagar area on Thursday morning and took him away after he protested against the action, according to the Times of India report.
The detention came as authorities maintained security arrangements across the city and other parts of the state to prevent disruptions during the bandh.
Cauvery Dispute Behind Bandh
The shutdown comes amid renewed tensions over the Cauvery water-sharing dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) has directed Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days from August 12. Pro-Kannada organisations have opposed the direction, arguing that Karnataka's own water requirements and the interests of its farmers must be protected. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has said the government must protect farmers while also complying with legal and court-related obligations.
Situation Being Closely Watched
With the bandh scheduled to continue until 6 pm, authorities are monitoring the situation across Bengaluru and other districts. While the initial response in the state capital has been low, localised protests or closures could still affect movement later in the day. For now, Bengaluru has largely remained operational despite the statewide bandh call, with public transport, educational institutions and most businesses continuing normal operations.
