A 36-year-old Kerala woman who went missing during a trek in the Tadiandamol hills of Karnataka’s Kodagu district has been found safe after a four-day-long search operation. Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre confirmed the development on Sunday, saying, “The woman has now been found, and I have also spoken to her. She is healthy.”
Identified as G S Sharanya, she had travelled alone from Kerala and was staying at a private homestay in Kakkabe village. On April 2, she began her trek to the Tadiandamol peak with a guide and a group of 15 trekkers but went missing later that afternoon after reportedly losing her way in the forest. Sharanya had last contacted the homestay by phone, informing them that she was lost. When she did not return with the rest of the group, authorities were alerted, and a search operation was launched immediately. “As soon as the matter came to light, five teams began a search operation starting the same day,” Khandre said. The search effort was later intensified, with nine teams working round-the-clock. Around 40 additional forest personnel were deployed on Sunday following instructions from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. “A total of nine teams conducted the search operation, with support from the Police Department, Anti-Naxal Squad, and Forest Department. Local tribal people also assisted,” the minister added.
Due to poor mobile connectivity, locating her exact position proved difficult. “She had been walking alone in the forest,” Khandre noted, describing her as “brave and adventurous.” Thermal drone cameras were also used during the operation.
Authorities have now ensured that she will be safely escorted back to her home in Kerala.
