Madhya Pradesh: Woman Delivers Quadruplets in Autorickshaw, All 4 Premature Babies Die
A woman delivered quadruplets in an autorickshaw while being taken to a hospital in Madhya Pradesh's Mandla district. All four premature babies died shortly after birth. The family alleged an ambulance was not available despite repeated calls, while health officials said the newborns died due to premature birth and low birth weight. The mother is stable, and officials say the case will be examined if a complaint is filed.
A woman gave birth to quadruplets in an autorickshaw while being taken to a hospital in Madhya Pradesh's Mandla district, but all four babies died shortly after birth, officials said on Tuesday, July 7. The family alleged that the absence of an ambulance delayed medical care and cost the newborns their lives, while health authorities said the babies died because they were born prematurely and were not fully developed.
The mother, Rajni Singaram, is undergoing treatment at the Bichhiya Community Health Centre and is reported to be out of danger. District authorities have said the matter will be examined if a formal complaint is submitted.
Delivery Took Place During Transit
District Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr DJ Mohanty said Rajni Singaram, a resident of Naigaon village, developed labour pain in the seventh month of her pregnancy and was initially taken to the government health centre in Ghuthas in a private vehicle.
Because of her critical condition, she was referred to the Community Health Centre in Bichhiya and was being transported there in an autorickshaw, he said. Before reaching the hospital, she delivered four babies inside the vehicle. Mohanty added, "All four babies, three girls and a boy, died because they were premature and weighed around 1.5 kilograms each."
Family Alleges Ambulance Was Not Available
Family members alleged that they had contacted the emergency ambulance service after Rajni went into labour but did not receive a response. According to the family, they arranged an autorickshaw to transport her to the hospital after failing to secure an ambulance. Her husband, Ganesh Singaram, claimed that if an ambulance had reached on time, the babies could have survived.
Responding to the allegations, Mandla District Magistrate Rahul Namdev Dhote told PTI that no formal complaint had been received regarding the incident. He said the matter would be investigated and appropriate action would be taken if a complaint was filed.
Health officials said the quadruplets were born in the seventh month of pregnancy and were severely premature. According to the administration, the incident centred on the deaths of the four premature babies, while the mother remains under treatment and is out of danger. Further action will depend on the findings of any inquiry initiated following a formal complaint.
