A 34-year-old woman was killed and six people were injured after a car allegedly driven by real estate developer Krishna Shantaram Chamankar crashed into a motorcycle and three autorickshaws at a traffic signal in Malad West, Mumbai. Chamankar was arrested following the August 30 accident and was later released on bail.
The victim, identified as Priyanka Satra, was riding pillion with her husband, Mayank Satra, when the car allegedly struck their motorcycle from behind near the SV Road-Mamledar Wadi junction. The collision continued after the motorcycle was hit, with the car allegedly crashing into three autorickshaws. Three drivers and passengers were among those injured, police said.
What happened at the Malad junction
The accident took place at around 8-8.30 pm when Priyanka and Mayank were returning home after buying vegetables. They were waiting at a traffic signal when Chamankar's MG Windsor allegedly rammed into their motorcycle. According to police, Chamankar told investigators that he believed the vehicle was in neutral and moving slowly. He allegedly attempted to apply the brake but pressed the accelerator instead. A medical examination conducted at a government hospital found no alcohol in his blood sample, police said.
CCTV footage of the collision has since emerged, showing the car striking vehicles waiting at the signal. Police are examining the footage as part of the investigation.
Police case and bail
Malad police arrested Chamankar on allegations of rash and negligent driving. A case was registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 106(1) for causing death by negligence, along with provisions relating to rash driving and the Motor Vehicles Act.
Chamankar was produced before a court following his arrest. He was subsequently released on bail on a cash bond of Rs 15,000, according to reports. The grant of bail does not amount to a finding on the allegations, and the investigation into the circumstances of the crash is continuing.
Family alleges preferential treatment
The case has also triggered questions from the victim's relatives over the treatment allegedly given to Chamankar at Malad police station. Priyanka's cousin, Pravin Cheda, wrote to senior police officials alleging that Chamankar was allowed to use his mobile phone while in the lock-up and received preferential treatment. The allegations have not been independently established. Police are continuing to record statements from injured persons and witnesses as part of the investigation.
Chamankar's link to Maharashtra Sadan case
The accident has also drawn attention because of Chamankar's earlier involvement in a high-profile legal case connected to the alleged Maharashtra Sadan scam.
Chamankar and his brother, Prasanna Chamankar, were named in a money-laundering case investigated by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the case involving former Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal. The Bombay High Court quashed the ED money-laundering case against the Chamankar brothers and their firm, K S Chamankar Enterprises, in 2025.
Investigation continues
Police are investigating the sequence of events leading to the collision, the circumstances in which Chamankar allegedly lost control of the vehicle and the claims made by those injured in the crash. The authorities are also expected to examine CCTV footage and witness statements as they proceed with the case. The allegations against Chamankar remain subject to the ongoing investigation and judicial process.
