The incident occurred early Sunday morning inside a hotel room near the railway hub. According to investigators, the victim, identified as 23-year-old Malani Guriya from Sonitpur district, had arrived in Rangia from Chennai on Saturday night accompanied by two friends. The suspect, identified as Abhijit Kindo of Udalguri district, met the group at the station and subsequently stayed overnight in Guriya's room. Authorities were alerted to the crime shortly after 6:00 a.m. when the Railway Protection Force (RPF) inspector notified local police. Upon forcing entry into the room, responding officers discovered Guriya deceased on the floor and Kindo suffering from multiple self-inflicted injuries. Officials state that Kindo allegedly used a pair of scissors and a electrical tester to carry out the attack before placing a phone call to the victim's friends to inform them of the murder.
Police immediately transferred Kindo to a local government hospital for medical treatment before processing his arrest under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Guwahati was dispatched to the crime scene to gather physical evidence and reconstruct the sequence of events. While investigators suspect a late-night altercation led to the fatal assault, senior police officials stated that the precise motive remains under investigation as legal proceedings continue.
