Four students died and another was injured after suspected toxic gas exposure inside an underground water tank at a residential Sanskrit school in Vrindavan’s Chaitanya Vihar area of Uttar Pradesh, officials said on Wednesday. The students had entered the 12-14-foot-deep tank to clean it after a foul smell was detected. According to Mathura District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh, the incident took place at a gurukulam run by Ashish Kumar Sharma. Around 200 students are reportedly enrolled at the institution, with nearly 100 currently residing on the premises.
Officials said the students first used a motor to drain water from the underground tank. After some water remained, one student entered the tank to clean it but soon became unconscious, apparently after being exposed to toxic gas. Four other students then entered the tank in an attempt to rescue him. All five students subsequently became unconscious and were pulled out by people present at the site before being taken to hospital.
