A safety scare was reported near Medetiya Nagar Metro Station on Mira-Bhayandar Road in Mira Road East on Monday, August 17, after granite stones fell during ongoing Metro Line 9 work, prompting concern among commuters. Initial reports described the incident as a portion of a metro slab falling near Sanjoli Jewellers and Thunga Hospital, with a school van reportedly sustaining roof damage.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), however, issued a clarification saying that no granite stones fell on or directly struck any school van or bus. According to the authority, the stones fell within the barricaded work area, while a vehicle passing through the vicinity later ran over scattered pieces, resulting in punctured tyres. MMRDA said no students were present in the vehicle and no injuries were reported. Mumbai Metro Accident: Parapet Wall Collapse From Elevated Metro Bridge in Mulund Kills 1, Injures 4 as Debris Falls on Vehicles on LBS Road (Watch Videos).

What happened at Medetiya Nagar Station

According to MMRDA, the incident occurred at approximately 11:50 AM during ongoing debris removal and material-shifting work at Medetiya Nagar Station of Metro Line 9.

The authority said a material basket being handled by a crane accidentally came into contact with granite stones stacked in the nearby FOB area. This caused some stones to fall from the FOB level into the barricaded work area. Mumbai Metro Line 4 Pillar Collapse in Mulund: At least 3 Injured After Slab Falls on Vehicles on LBS Road (Watch Video).

The incident took place along the busy Mira-Bhayandar Road, where ongoing metro construction has raised concerns over the safety of motorists, pedestrians and other road users.

A viral video circulating after the incident shows debris on the road and a school van stopped ahead. The van's roof can be seen damaged in the footage. However, MMRDA's clarification states that the granite stones did not directly strike the school vehicle.

MMRDA imposes INR 12.5 crore in penalties

MMRDA said it has taken serious note of the safety lapse and initiated stringent action against agencies involved in the work.

The penalties announced by the authority are:

  • J. Kumar Infraprojects Ltd. (JKIL), Contractor – INR  10 crore
  • Gajanan – INR 1.5 crore
  • Systra-CEG-General Consultant – INR 1 crore

The total penalties amount to INR 12.5 crore.

MMRDA has directed all concerned agencies to strictly adhere to prescribed safety protocols and implement necessary corrective measures to prevent any recurrence.

The incident comes as Metro Line 9 construction continues to expand connectivity between Dahisar East and Mira-Bhayandar. The Medetiya Nagar station is a three-tier structure, with a vehicular flyover at the first level, a concourse at the second and a platform at the third.

Earlier fatal Metro accident in Mulund

The latest incident has also brought renewed attention to safety at Mumbai Metropolitan Region metro construction sites following a fatal accident on February 14, 2026, on LBS Road in Mulund West.

In that incident, a 1.8-tonne precast concrete parapet segment from the under-construction Mumbai Metro Line 4 fell onto vehicles travelling below. One person, Ramdhan Yadav, was killed inside an autorickshaw, while three others were injured.

A subsequent MMRDA probe found several procedural and supervisory lapses. It concluded that a welder had cut temporary fasteners before the parapet segment had been properly stitched to the structure, leaving the 1.8-tonne segment unstable. The investigation also cited failures involving the contractor, site supervisor, site engineer and project manager.

Following the Mulund accident, MMRDA imposed an INR 5 crore penalty on the contractor and INR 1 crore on the general consultant. The authority also took disciplinary action against officials involved in oversight of the project.
