Mumbai FDA Suspends Amazon Warehouse, Suleman Usman Mithaiwala Licence Over Hygiene Lapses

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licences of 10 food establishments in Mumbai, including an Amazon warehouse and dark store in Kandivali East, Suleman Usman Mithaiwala on Mohammed Ali Road and a Swiggy Instamart dark store in Ballard Estate, after inspections found serious hygiene and food-safety violations. The action was part of the FDA's festive-season crackdown between September 17 and 20.

The latest action follows a series of inspections by the state food regulator in Mumbai as authorities step up checks on food businesses ahead of the festive season.

Swiggy Instamart Dark Store Found With Rodents, Cockroaches

At the Swiggy Instamart dark store in Ballard Estate, operated by Swinsta ENT Pvt Ltd, FDA officials reportedly found live rodents and cockroaches in food-handling areas. Inspectors also found rodent droppings in storage areas and rice bags that had been gnawed open, with grains spilling onto contaminated floors. An unclean, functioning toilet was also located next to the food storage area, raising concerns over possible contamination. Amazon Warehouse Faces Action Over Wastewater, Food Storage

The FDA also suspended the licence of an Amazon warehouse and dark store in Kandivali East, operated by Acculogicx Supply Chain Solutions. Officials found wastewater stagnation around drainage and washing areas, along with poor segregation between food and non-food items. Cleaning chemicals were reportedly stored close to food packaging materials, while temperature logs for perishable products were missing.

Suleman Usman Mithaiwala Licence Suspended

The food licence of Suleman Usman Mithaiwala, a well-known sweets shop on Mohammed Ali Road, was also suspended following the inspection. According to the FDA findings reported by the Times of India, the food preparation and storage areas lacked adequate physical separation from drainage, sewage lines and waste disposal areas. Trap-less drains were also identified as a potential route for pests and contamination to reach food-contact surfaces. The action comes during a period when the Maharashtra FDA has intensified inspections of restaurants, sweet shops, warehouses and other food businesses across Mumbai.

Other Mumbai Food Establishments Face FDA Action

The FDA also suspended licences of several other establishments, including Nice Enterprises in Chembur, Jain Sweet & Bhelpuri House in Kandivali West, Go Green Food Hospitality in Ghatkopar East, Swad Snacks Corner in Lalbaug-Parel, Lucknowi Kebab in Versova and Zaika Moradabadi Hotel in Andheri West. The latest action follows earlier FDA inspections in Mumbai this month, including action against Olympia Coffee House and other establishments over food-safety and hygiene deficiencies. Maharashtra FDA's Festive-Season Food Safety Drive

The Mumbai action forms part of a wider Maharashtra FDA campaign targeting adulterated, substandard and unhygienically prepared food ahead of the festive season. Across Maharashtra, officials reportedly seized or destroyed around 32,023 kg/litres of suspected substandard, adulterated or unhygienic food products valued at about Rs 1.36 crore during the wider crackdown. The statewide drive also resulted in FIRs and arrests, according to reports citing the FDA. The inspections are expected to continue as the department focuses on hygiene, storage conditions, pest control, sanitation and compliance with food-safety requirements at establishments handling food.
