Maharashtra FDA Suspends Food Licence of Suleman Usman Mithaiwala and 9 Other Mumbai Establishments

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licence of one of Mumbai’s prominent sweet shops, Suleman Usman Mithaiwala on Mohammed Ali Road, during a major crackdown on food establishments across the state, an official statement said on Monday, September 21. The action, spearheaded by the Tukaram Mundhe-led food safety agency, has resulted in the suspension of licences for 10 food establishments in Mumbai alone.

According to the FDA, an inspection found alleged violations in the preparation and storage areas of the iconic sweet shop, including inadequate separation from drainage channels, sewage lines, and waste storage areas, PTI reported. Statewide Crackdown and Seizures Worth INR 1.36 Crore

Officials from the Maharashtra FDA underscored the objective behind the intensive enforcement drive across distribution hubs and retail outlets.

Briefly expressing the details of the action taken, the Maharashtra FDA said that approximately 32,023 kg/litres of food stock valued at INR 1.36 crore was seized or destroyed across the state. Amid the festive crackdown, officials noted that khoya, mawa, peda, ghee, oil, barfi, dried fruits, jaggery, sweets, and other dairy products were confiscated. In a related interception, the FDA seized 1,868 kg of suspected inferior-quality or improperly labelled turmeric powder worth INR 6.53 lakh from Miraj MIDC.

Major Mumbai Outlets Face Licence Suspensions

Inspecting teams visited multiple commercial kitchens, warehouses, and dark stores across the city, uncovering hygiene non-compliance and structural lapses:

• Suleman Usman Mithaiwala (Mohammed Ali Road): The FDA cited alleged violations involving food preparation and storage areas located without the required separation from drainage channels, sewage lines, and waste storage areas.

• Swiggy Instamart Dark Store / Swinsta ENT Private Limited (Ballard Estate): FDA officials allegedly found a live rat in the food-handling area, rice bags gnawed open by rodents, rodent droppings, and a cockroach infestation. Flies were also reportedly found inside food storage carts.

• Sadguru Sweets and Farsan Mart (Malad East): The FDA suspended the licence of the establishment citing alleged unhygienic conditions and structural deficiencies.

• Acculogicx Supply Chain Solutions Pvt. Ltd / Amazon Warehouse (Kandivali): The FDA stated that its inspection uncovered drainage and sanitation problems, along with broken floor tiles near drainage and washing areas.

• Nice Enterprises (Chembur): The FDA forthwith suspended the licence of the establishment and ordered them to stop business immediately after serious deficiencies were reported.

• Jain Sweet and Bhelpuri House LLP (Kandivali West): Owing to deficiencies and safety standard violations found during the inspection, the FDA suspended the establishment's licence.

Additional Establishments Facing Regulatory Action

Beyond the six major units, the Maharashtra FDA suspended the licences of four other food outlets across Mumbai for failing to comply with statutory sanitary mandates:

• Go Green Food Hospitality in Ghatkopar East

• Swad Snacks Corner in Lalbaug-Parel

• Lucknowi Kebab in Versova

• Zaika Moradabadi Hotel in Versova

FDA officials maintained that inspection teams will continue unannounced audits throughout the festive period to penalise adulteration and curb the sale of unhygienic foodstuffs across Maharashtra.
