Mumbai, December 10:  In what is believed to be another milestone, the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) witnessed record flight movements. The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) broke its own record of 1003 aircraft movements in a day, by doing 1004 aircraft movements on Saturday. It is the highest traffic in a single day at any single runway airport in India till date.

News agency ANI said that sources attributed the increase in the number of aircrafts was owing to the pre-wedding celebrations of Mukesh and Nita Ambani's daughter Isha Ambani and Anand Piramal in Udaipur, with most guests travelling from Mumbai or using it as a transit point. The capacity of the Mumbai airport is to handle 40 million passengers, but since 2016 it has been handling more than the estimated number. The airport is believed to handle more than 40 flights in one hour. On June 5, the Mumbai airport had broken its own record of handling 988 flight movements in a day and had handled 1003 flights that day.

The record for 988 flight movements was created in February, when Mumbai airport handled 980 arrivals in 24 hours and added to its reputation of being the busiest single-runway airport in the world. The record before this was of December 6, when the airport had landed 974 flights. Though Mumbai holds the record of most number of flights in a day, the most efficient single- runway airport in the world record is still with Gatwick airport, UK's second largest airport.
