The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a public advisory after the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) placed the Mumbai metropolitan region under a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall. The alert also forecasts strong winds reaching speeds of 80 to 90 kilometres per hour, prompting precautionary measures across the city.
In response to the weather warning, the State Disaster Management Authority has instructed private offices in Mumbai to allow employees to work from home. A half-day holiday has also been declared for government and semi-government employees after noon, excluding essential services.
IMD Issues Red Alert for Mumbai Region
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall in the Mumbai metropolitan area, forecasting winds blowing at speeds of 80 to 90 kilometers per hour.
The alert comes amid continuous heavy monsoon activity affecting several parts of Maharashtra, with waterlogging, traffic disruptions and localised flooding reported in low-lying areas of the city. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall hours.
Work From Home Advisory for Private Offices
In view of the weather conditions, the State Disaster Management Authority has directed all employees in private offices in Mumbai to work from home.
The advisory is aimed at reducing commuter movement during expected heavy rainfall and minimising pressure on public transport systems, which are often affected during extreme monsoon conditions.
Half-Day Holiday for Government Offices
Additionally, a half-day holiday has been declared for government and semi-government employees after noon, excluding essential services.
Essential services, including emergency response, healthcare, and disaster management teams, will continue to operate as usual.
Mumbai frequently experiences disruptions during the southwest monsoon due to intense rainfall, high tides, and drainage limitations in low-lying areas. The city’s civic and disaster management agencies routinely issue advisories such as work-from-home orders and staggered office timings during red alert conditions to ensure public safety and reduce congestion.
