Mumbai, March 13: An investigation is underway in Mumbai after private CCTV video showing a woman kissing a man inside a residential elevator in Andheri was leaked and went viral on social media. The incident, which occurred in a housing society in Andheri West, has led to a police case against a 25-year-old man, identified as the son of the society’s chairman, for allegedly recording the screen and distributing the clip. The leak has sparked a heated debate regarding the breach of privacy and the misuse of security surveillance in private buildings.
The legal fallout began after the woman in the video filed a formal complaint with the Amboli Police, alleging that the footage was intentionally leaked to tarnish her reputation. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused allegedly used his access to the society's security room to film the monitor with his smartphone. The video quickly spread across local WhatsApp groups, leading to widespread harassment of the individuals involved. The Amboli Police have booked the accused under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. The primary charges include voyeurism and the non-consensual distribution of private images.
Investigators have seized the society's Digital Video Recorder (DVR) to track exactly when and how the footage was accessed. "Surveillance cameras are for security, not for monitoring the private lives of residents," a police official noted, adding that the unauthorised sharing of such content is a serious criminal offense. The incident has caused significant unrest within the housing complex, as residents demand stricter controls over who can access the CCTV room. Many are calling for a complete overhaul of the society's management rules to prevent security staff or family members of office bearers from viewing footage without a valid reason.
Under current data protection discussions in India, residential lifts are considered areas where individuals have a "reasonable expectation of privacy." The police have warned that anyone found further circulating the viral clip could also face legal consequences for abetting the crime.
