In a striking visual tribute to a new era of bilateral relations, Mumbai’s iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link was illuminated on Tuesday night with the national flags of India and the United Kingdom. The spectacular light display marks the eve of the historic India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which is set to officially come into force on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.

A Visual Milestone for Bilateral Diplomacy

The cable-stayed bridge, which spans the Arabian Sea, served as a brilliant canvas showcasing the tricolor of India alongside the UK’s Union Jack. This symbolic gesture celebrates years of intense negotiations that culminated in the signing of the landmark free trade agreement (FTA). According to government officials, the visual display highlights the deep-rooted diplomatic and economic partnership between the two nations as they embark on a highly anticipated economic integration. What the India-UK Trade Pact Entails

The trade agreement-hailed by Union Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal as a "gold standard" and one of the country's most ambitious trade pacts-will drastically lower trade barriers.

Under the agreement, the UK is immediately eliminating tariffs on 96.8% of its tariff lines, ultimately expanding duty-free access to 99% of Indian exports. This immediate zero-duty access is expected to provide a major boost to labor-intensive Indian sectors, including:

  • Textiles and garments

  • Leather and footwear

  • Gems and jewelry

  • Marine products and processed foods

In return, India is opening up its market to British goods by slashing import duties on premium Scotch whisky (dropping from 150% down to 75% immediately) and UK-manufactured cars and trucks. Import duties on British fully-built cars will drop progressively from 110% to 10%, though India has carefully negotiated a five-year transition window to protect its domestic electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers.

Unlocking a USD 100 Billion Trade Corridor

The primary economic objective of the CETA is to nearly double bilateral commerce, aiming to scale up two-way trade from the current USD 55–60 billion to USD 100 billion by 2030. India-UK Double Contribution Convention to Protect EPF Savings of Indian Workers: Goyal.

Beyond goods, the pact introduces a groundbreaking Double Contribution Convention (DCC). This deal ensures that Indian skilled professionals working temporarily in the UK will not have to pay double social security contributions, a move projected to save costs for over 75,000 Indian workers and 900 employers.

Furthermore, India has opened its central government procurement market—worth an estimated £38 billion annually—allowing UK companies to actively bid on high-value public infrastructure, transport, and green energy contracts.
