A major emergency response was triggered in Nagpur's Godhni area during the early hours of Monday following a chlorine gas leak at a municipal water treatment plant under the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP). More than 40 people, including plant personnel and residents of neighboring localities, have been hospitalized after experiencing severe breathing difficulties and eye irritation.
The incident took place around 1:00 AM when a 900 kg chlorine cylinder developed a rupture at the Godhni Municipal Council Water Treatment Plant. Dense fumes rapidly diffused into nearby residential quarters near Nag Mandir Tekdi and Fago Patil Layout, waking residents to strong chemical odors and sudden coughing fits. Emergency units—including the Nagpur Municipal Corporation Fire Department, local police, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)—were dispatched immediately to execute rescue and containment procedures. Equipped with Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) sets and heavy protective gear, responders evacuated residents within a 200-meter perimeter and cordoned off the facility.
By 5:30 AM, joint teams from the NDRF, Fire Department, and Orange City Water (OCW) managed to submerged the leaking 900 kg container into a specialized neutralization tank containing a caustic soda and water solution to safely halt further gas emissions.
The affected individuals were rushed to Mayo Hospital and Sparsh Hospital in Zingabai Takli for treatment. Medical authorities confirmed that while several patients, including a few in intensive care, are receiving targeted respiratory treatment, all are in stable condition. A few individuals with mild symptoms have already been discharged. No Life-threatening Situation at Leakage Spot, Says SP Palghar Amid Chaos over Reported Oleum Gas Leak.

Officials from the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) and Mankapur Police have launched an official inquiry to establish the exact cause of the valve failure or cylinder breakdown. While atmospheric gas concentrations have dropped significantly and the situation is reported to be fully under control, authorities have urged local residents to follow safety advisories and avoid entering the immediate zone until clearance is granted.
