The Nanded district police department has initiated a preliminary inquiry into the conduct of a police constable who was booked for allegedly attempting to marry a second time without legally divorcing his first wife. The disciplinary action follows a public altercation in Hingoli district’s Vasmat, where the constable reportedly assaulted his wife after she arrived at the wedding hall to stop the ceremony.
Nanded Superintendent of Police Nilabh Rohan confirmed that senior leadership has taken serious cognisance of the First Information Report (FIR) filed against the constable. The move comes after a mobile phone video showing the officer, dressed in his wedding attire, physically attacking his wife went viral across social media platforms, drawing sharp public criticism. ‘Shaanti Se Baitho, Dete Raho INR 15,000, Khush Raho’: Supreme Court Refuses Divorce to Man Paying Maintenance for 16 Years.
According to local authorities in Vasmat, the constable married his first wife in 2022, and the couple has a two-year-old daughter. While investigators noted that the couple had been experiencing ongoing marital disputes, official records show that no legal divorce had been obtained or finalized prior to the scheduled second marriage.
The victim stated that she was entirely unaware of the wedding plans until July 5, when she discovered photographs of the pre-wedding ceremonies uploaded to social media. She immediately traveled to the Vasmat marriage venue with family members, arriving around 4:00 p.m. to publicly confront her husband and halt the proceedings.
The situation escalated rapidly upon their arrival. The filed complaint alleges that the constable and several of his relatives responded to the confrontation by verbally abusing and physically assaulting the wife and her family. The victim approached the Vasmat City police station later that evening to report the violence. Vasmat City Inspector Sudhir Wagh stated that an FIR has been formally registered against the constable and 11 other individuals. The charges have been filed under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions related to voluntary hurt, wrongful restraint, and public misconduct. Head Constable Sheikh Sami has been assigned to lead the ongoing investigation, though no arrests have been made at this stage.
