A 30-year-old school bus driver was arrested in Navi Mumbai for allegedly s*xually assaulting a three-year-old girl inside the vehicle after she was left alone on the route. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon, September 2, in Kamothe when the private bus, hired by the school, was dropping off kindergarten and primary students. According to police, the child travelled on the bus daily.
"After the other children had alighted at their respective destinations, the three-year-old was allegedly left alone in the bus with the driver," police stated, reports The Times of India. The accused allegedly took advantage of the situation and assaulted the child. Delhi: Teen Student Gang-Raped on Moving Sleeper Bus Across NCR, Driver and Conductor Arrested.
The matter came to light after the girl returned home and complained of abdominal pain. When her grandmother asked her about it, the child stated that the "driver uncle" had troubled her inside the bus. The family first raised the issue with the school management before approaching local authorities.
Following a medical examination that police confirmed indicated s*xual assault, a case was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) - including provisions concerning the rape of a minor under 12 - and the Protection of Children from S*xual Offences (POCSO) Act. The accused was produced before a Panvel court and remanded in police custody. Investigators are also recording statements from the school management staff as part of the ongoing probe.
Broader Concerns Over Student Safety
The Navi Mumbai episode reflects a disturbing pattern of safety breaches involving minors on transport networks and within educational institutions. The Navi Mumbai incident mirrors the Delhi incident where a 16-year-old student from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly subjected to a brutal gang-rape aboard a moving sleeper bus that travelled nearly 47 kilometres across the National Capital Region (NCR).
