A 38-year-old man, identified as Sanjay Kantu Yadav, died while in police custody at NRI Sagari Police Station in Navi Mumbai on Thursday, October 8. Yadav had been arrested by the Navi Mumbai International Airport Police in connection with a case and was subsequently remanded to police custody by a court. According to police, Yadav was lodged in the lock-up when staff noticed him clenching his fists and repeatedly flexing his arms and legs. His condition later deteriorated, following which police officials rushed him to Meenatai Thackeray Hospital in Nerul, where doctors declared him dead during treatment.

Navi Mumbai Police Custody Death: What Happened

Police said Yadav had undergone a medical examination at Panvel Rural Hospital before his arrest. He reportedly did not complain of any health problems when he was produced before the court. He also underwent another medical examination on October 6 and, according to police, did not report any illness or health-related complaint at that time. Yadav lived at Ananta Tower in Ulwe Sector 6 and was originally from Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi district. Inquest, Post-Mortem Ordered

Following the death, senior police officials were informed about the incident. An inquest is being conducted through videography in the presence of the Belapur First Class Judicial Magistrate, panch witnesses and members of Yadav's family. His body is being sent to Mumbai's J.J. Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The findings of the post-mortem are expected to help establish the circumstances and cause of death. Police said further legal proceedings are underway. At this stage, no conclusion has been given regarding the cause of Yadav's death. Earlier Custodial Death in Mumbai

The incident comes amid another custodial-death investigation in Maharashtra. The state Crime Investigation Department (CID) is probing the death of 35-year-old Imran Shaikh, who died while in the custody of the Railway Protection Force at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai in September. The Navi Mumbai case is now subject to the inquest and post-mortem process, which will determine the next course of the investigation.
