The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) officially launched the beta version of its completely revamped ticket-booking website on Wednesday. Marking the first major redesign of the national railway reservation portal in over two decades, the updated interface went live for public testing at 9:00 PM.

The Ministry of Railways confirmed that the beta release aims to gather live user feedback before transitioning to a full public rollout in the coming weeks. Passengers can access the new platform via a dedicated link hosted directly on the existing IRCTC homepage. IRCTC Launches Revamped Website: Everything You Need To Know About the July 15 Upgrade.

IRCTC Beta Website: Key Upgrades for Faster Booking

The overhauled platform prioritizes speed, simplicity, and accessibility, targeting long-standing user pain points. The primary enhancements featured in the beta version include:

  • Clutter-Free Interface: The portal eliminates unnecessary pop-up windows, flashing graphic banners, and distracting visual elements that historically slowed down page rendering.

  • Reduced CAPTCHAs: In a significant shift to accelerate high-traffic bookings, the platform cuts down heavily on repetitive CAPTCHA verifications.

  • Unified Seat Availability: Users no longer need to toggle between individual coach options (such as Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, or AC 2 Tier). Seat availability across all classes is now displayed simultaneously on a single screen.

  • Streamlined Checkout: The total number of steps required to complete a ticket reservation has been reduced. Frequent travelers can also save passenger profiles securely to facilitate faster repeat bookings.

  • Flexible Fare Calendar: A new built-in calendar allows passengers to view and compare ticket prices across multiple dates, aiding those with flexible travel plans.

Enhanced Infrastructure to Handle Peak Tatkal Rush

Behind the updated interface is a substantial upgrade to the railway network's technical infrastructure. The new platform is engineered to process more than 1.5 lakh (150,000) ticket bookings per minute, a fivefold increase from the previous system's capacity of roughly 32,000 bookings per minute.

Simultaneously, the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) backend is being scaled to handle upwards of 40 lakh (4 million) enquiries per minute, up from the current 4 lakh limit. This backend reinforcement is explicitly designed to minimize system crashes and downtime during the critical morning Tatkal rush hours. What Is New on the New IRCTC Website? Check 5 Major Changes.

Student Input Shapes Redesigned Railway Portal

The push for a revamped portal originated directly from public feedback. During a recent interaction in Rajasthan with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, engineering students raised concerns regarding the cumbersome layout and excessive CAPTCHAs on the legacy website.

Following the viral interaction, the Railway Ministry integrated students from the Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) Jaipur into the design process. The beta version reflects their direct recommendations for a cleaner user experience.

The Ministry stated that the website will soon integrate with a brand-new Passenger Reservation Engine currently being upgraded in parallel, promising a fully seamless experience once the final site goes live.
