Prayagraj, February 5: A disturbing case involving the alleged exploitation of a 15-year-old girl has surfaced in Prayagraj, where her eggs were reportedly extracted at an IVF centre in exchange for an Apple iPhone and Rs 15,000. Police are investigating the case as a possible organised racket involving illegal surrogacy, exploitation of minors, and alleged religious inducement.
The victim, Komal (name changed), went missing from her home in the Nawabganj area in January and was later found admitted to an IVF centre in Civil Lines. According to her mother, Shalini (name changed), the girl had undergone a surgical procedure without family consent, during which her eggs were extracted for another woman. Shalini told authorities that her daughter had been in contact with a woman named Joya, who allegedly gained the girl’s trust over time. Komal reportedly told the magistrate that she was promised money, material rewards, and a “better life” after a “small operation.” She was allegedly given hormonal injections prior to the procedure and was repeatedly taken to the IVF centre before the surgery was performed on January 16. Police records state that only Rs 5,000 was paid to the girl, while the promised iPhone was never delivered. Investigators have also found indications that 20-25 underage girls may have been similarly targeted over the past year.
After initially returning home, the minor went missing again, prompting further police action. On February 3, she was traced and produced before the Prayagraj Child Welfare Committee (CWC). The CWC has since placed her in a one-stop shelter home, citing concerns of psychological manipulation. Her medical examination is scheduled for February 5.
CWC Chairperson Akhilesh Mishra said the girl’s statements suggest she was brainwashed and medically exploited. Authorities are now probing three key aspects of the case: the number of minors involved, the possible role of illegal surrogacy or s*xual exploitation networks, and whether inducement for religious conversion was part of the operation.
A fresh complaint has been filed by the victim’s mother. Police are currently searching for the accused woman, Joya, and questioning links to IVF centres that may have violated medical and legal protocols. The investigation is ongoing.
