Pune Auto-Rickshaw Fares To Rise Soon? RTO Clears Proposal, Base Fare May Increase to INR 30
Auto-rickshaw fares in Pune may soon increase after the Pune RTO approved a proposal to raise the minimum fare from INR 25 to INR 30 and the per-kilometre charge from INR 17 to INR 20. The proposal now awaits Regional Transport Authority approval. If cleared, the hike will affect lakhs of daily commuters across the city.
Travelling by auto-rickshaw in Pune could soon become more expensive after the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) accepted a proposal to revise fares submitted by auto-rickshaw unions. The proposal will now be placed before the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) for final approval. If cleared, the minimum fare for the first 1.5 kilometres will increase from INR 25 to INR 30, while the per-kilometre charge thereafter will rise from INR 17 to INR 20.
The proposed revision comes after auto-rickshaw unions sought a fare hike, citing rising operational costs driven by higher CNG and conventional fuel prices. Authorities said the revised fare structure was prepared after examining the unions' demand and has now been forwarded to the RTA, chaired by Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi, for its final decision. Pune Auto Fare Hike: What Will Change?
Under the proposal, passengers will pay:
| Fare Component | Current Rate | Proposed Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum fare (first 1.5 km) | INR 25 | INR 30 |
| Per kilometre charge (thereafter) | INR 17 | INR 20 |
If approved, this would be the first revision in Pune's auto-rickshaw fares after a significant gap.
Why Are Auto Fares Being Revised?
Auto-rickshaw unions argued that sustained increases in CNG and fuel prices, along with higher operating expenses, have made the current fare structure financially unsustainable for drivers.
Taking these concerns into account, the Pune RTO prepared a revised fare proposal and forwarded it to the Regional Transport Authority for consideration. The proposal is expected to be taken up at the committee's next meeting. Once approved, the revised fares will be implemented across Pune. Impact on Daily Commuters
The fare hike is expected to affect lakhs of commuters who rely on auto-rickshaws for daily travel.
Office-goers, school and college students, women commuters and passengers using autos for last-mile connectivity could see an increase in their everyday transportation expenses. The proposed INR 5 increase in the base fare and ₹3 hike in the per-kilometre rate may significantly raise commuting costs for frequent users.
Auto-Rickshaws Play a Key Role in Pune
Pune has an estimated 1.3 lakh auto-rickshaws, making them one of the city's primary public transport options alongside PMPML buses.
Together, the two transport modes serve around 20 lakh passenger trips every day, highlighting the important role auto-rickshaws play in Pune's urban mobility network. For now, commuters will have to wait for the Regional Transport Authority's final decision on whether and when the revised fares will come into effect.
