Punjab Youth Consumes Poison Outside DC Office, Alleges Threats Over ‘Chitta’ Drug Video
A youth in Punjab’s Sangrur district allegedly consumed a poisonous substance outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office after claiming that he and his family were being threatened and harassed for raising concerns over the alleged sale of drugs in his village.

The man, identified as Jagseer Singh alias Jagga of Namol village, was taken to a government hospital in Sangrur and later referred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala for further treatment.
According to reports, Jagseer had previously posted a video alleging drug sales in his village. He claimed that after the video was circulated, village sarpanch Sukhbir Singh and his associates threatened him. He also alleged that the video was later deleted but the threats continued. Jagseer further alleged that the sarpanch and his associates assaulted him at his home and damaged or removed CCTV equipment. His friend Manjinder Singh, who accompanied him to the DC office, made similar allegations and claimed Jagseer had footage showing people allegedly selling ‘chitta’ in the area. Sangrur SSP Ravjot Kaur Grewal said Jagseer’s statement would be recorded once doctors permit it. Police had earlier registered a daily diary report after the youth allegedly expressed suicidal intentions. There is also some variation in reports regarding the substance consumed. Jagseer’s friend reportedly said he had consumed Sulphas, while a doctor at the Sangrur hospital told NDTV that the poisonous substance was identified as “Farnel.”
The village sarpanch named in the allegations has said he was unaware of the incident and would look into the matter. Police are expected to establish the circumstances after recording Jagseer’s statement and completing their inquiry. The Sangrur incident comes amid heightened political attention on Punjab’s drug problem. Opposition leaders have criticised the Aam Aadmi Party government over the allegations, while the government’s response to drug-related complaints and the protection of people raising such concerns has become a subject of political debate. The case also follows the death of another Sangrur resident, Gulzar Singh, who died after consuming poison earlier this month. The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has sought a report from the Punjab government over allegations surrounding his death and the claims he made before it. For the latest Sangrur case, however, allegations of threats, assault, drug sales and police inaction remain subject to investigation. Authorities are yet to independently establish the full sequence of events.
