Rajasthan: 25-Year-Old Woman Dies Hours After Normal Delivery, Family Alleges Negligence
A 25-year-old woman, Nisha Meena, died within hours of delivering her baby at Bundi District Government Hospital, with her family alleging medical negligence. The hospital denied the allegations and said she suffered a suspected amniotic fluid embolism. Her newborn was referred to Kota, while an inquiry and maternal death audit were ordered to establish what happened.
A 25-year-old woman died within hours of delivering a baby at Bundi District Government Hospital in Rajasthan on Sunday, August 9, with her family alleging medical negligence. The hospital administration, however, denied the allegations and said the woman developed a sudden and fatal medical complication despite efforts to revive her.
The deceased was identified as Nisha Meena, wife of Jagdish Meena and a resident of Dhanatri village. Hospital officials said Nisha had been admitted on Friday and was initially advised a surgical delivery because of obstructed labour. However, following a request from her family, doctors proceeded with a normal delivery. Rajasthan Woman Dies After Childbirth; Family Alleges Doctors Slept Despite Repeated Pleas for Help.
Woman Dies Hours After Delivery in Rajasthan
Nisha delivered her baby at around 11 am on Sunday. Shortly afterwards, both the mother and newborn began showing signs of deterioration. According to PMO Dr LN Meena, Nisha complained of severe chest pain within an hour of delivery and then collapsed as her condition became critical.
Doctors attempted to revive her, but she could not be saved. The cause of death is suspected to be amniotic fluid embolism, a rare and potentially fatal medical emergency. Acting PMO Govind Gupta said the condition can occur when amniotic fluid or fetal cells enter the mother’s blood, potentially causing pulmonary complications, sudden collapse and heart failure.
Hospital Denies Negligence Allegations
Principal medical officer Dr LN Meena refuted the family’s allegations of medical negligence and said hospital staff made efforts to save the woman. He said Nisha had been admitted to the hospital on Friday and was initially advised a surgical delivery because of obstructed labour.
According to the hospital, the family requested a normal delivery, following which her treatment proceeded accordingly. The hospital has not concluded that the suspected amniotic fluid embolism was definitively responsible for her death. The exact sequence of events is expected to be established through the inquiry and maternal death audit.
Newborn Referred to Kota Hospital
The newborn also showed signs of deterioration after the delivery and was referred to Kota’s JK Lone Hospital for further treatment. The condition of the newborn was not specified in the information available.
Following Nisha’s death, the hospital administration transferred all labour room nursing and support staff who were on duty at the time. A formal inquiry has also been ordered. Hospital officials said a mandatory maternal death audit involving three gynaecologists will be conducted to determine the exact sequence of events surrounding the woman’s death.
The inquiry is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the delivery, the woman’s deterioration and the medical treatment provided before and after the emergency.
Nisha’s family members and villagers protested at the hospital premises following her death, alleging negligence. The protesters reportedly created a ruckus and stopped the ambulance carrying the woman’s body to the mortuary.
Senior officials and police personnel reached the hospital and attempted to persuade the family to allow a fair investigation into the allegations. After the post-mortem was completed in the presence of administrative officials, Nisha’s body was handed over to her family and transported to her home in an ambulance.
The allegations of negligence remain disputed, with the hospital denying wrongdoing and a formal inquiry now underway to establish what led to the woman’s death.
