Why Rajasthan Pollution Control Board Ordered Shutdown of Carlsberg India's Alwar Brewery
The Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board has ordered the closure of Carlsberg India's Alwar brewery over environmental breaches, including emissions nearly eight times above legal limits. Power to the unit was cut off after it shared only 35.12 per cent of required monitoring data, coming just as the firm prepares for a USD 700 million Indian IPO.
The Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board (RSPCB) has ordered Carlsberg India to close its brewery located in Alwar, Rajasthan, following severe environmental regulatory violations. The action comes as the Danish brewer prepares for a proposed USD 700 million Initial Public Offering (IPO) to list its Indian business on the domestic stock exchanges.
Environmental Violations and Regulatory Findings
According to the regulatory order, an inspection conducted by central pollution regulators revealed that particulate emissions at the Alwar facility exceeded permitted limits by nearly eight times, reports the Economic Times. Furthermore, the brewery failed to comply with mandatory data-sharing protocols. Old Monk Ban: Why Is Maharashtra Losing Over INR 300 Crore in Excise Revenue Amid Factory Shutdown?
The board noted that the facility transmitted only 35.12 per cent of the required pollution-monitoring data to the central regulator, falling significantly short of the mandatory 85 per cent threshold. Following the findings, the RSPCB revoked the plant's Consent to Operate (CTO) and instructed the local electricity distribution utility to cut off power supply to the facility to enforce the closure.
Impact on Operations and Upcoming Listing
The closure order follows an inspection conducted by central pollution authorities in July, which resulted in a formal recommendation for closure in August. Industry experts noted that while the shutdown could temporarily affect regional supply in Rajasthan, the overall market impact is expected to remain limited as the peak summer demand season has passed.
