Their maternal aunt raised the alarm after the twins failed to return home after leaving early that morning, prompting a search. Investigators suspect that the murders were linked to the twins' opposition to their mother's relationship with a man from the same village. According to police, Preeti had married Niranjan Singh, a resident of Saroth Mansa village in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district, around 20 years ago. The couple had four children: an 18-year-old daughter, a 16-year-old son and the 13-year-old twins. After her husband's death several years ago, Preeti and her children moved to her parental home in Badesra village, where the family had been living. Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the killings and the alleged roles of the three people taken into custody.
