A video shared by a gynaecologist from Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district has sparked widespread discussion on social media after a 22-year-old pregnant woman revealed she is expecting her sixth child because her family wanted more sons.

Dr Pragya Tomar, a gynaecologist at Spandan Hospital in Baraut, posted a video from her clinic showing a consultation with the young woman and her husband, who are originally from Rajasthan. During the interaction, the woman disclosed that she is five months pregnant with her sixth child despite being only 22 years old.

According to the woman, she was married at the age of 15 or 16 in what she described as a child marriage. She told the doctor that she already has five children, including four daughters and one son, with her eldest child being eight years old. ‘Pehli Baar Kiya Hai Jeevan Men’: Man, Guided by Doctor on Video Call, Helps Woman Deliver Baby at Ram Mandir Station in Mumbai; Netizens Laud Him As ‘Real Hero’.

When Dr Tomar asked the couple why they continued having children, the woman admitted that the repeated pregnancies were linked to the family's desire for a son. However, even after the birth of a son, the couple decided to expand their family further. The husband explained that one son was not enough and said they wanted at least two sons. He also argued that having more children would mean more earning members in the future. Trichy Shocker: Mother of 4 in Tamil Nadu Dies After Taking Unsupervised Abortion Pills to Avoid 5th Pregnancy.

The doctor expressed concern over the woman's health, noting that she had complained of dizziness and breathlessness. Dr Tomar stressed the importance of maintaining adequate gaps between pregnancies and warned that repeated childbirths could pose serious risks to the woman's wellbeing.

Questioning societal pressure surrounding male heirs and family lineage, the doctor urged the couple to prioritise the mother's health and consider whether they could adequately provide for a large family. In the caption of her viral post, Dr Tomar asked, “Is it right to endanger someone's life in the desire for a son?”

The video has resonated with social media users, attracting nearly 40 million views. Many commenters criticised the husband's remarks and expressed concern for the woman's health. Several users highlighted the challenges of raising a large family and questioned the continued preference for male children despite changing social attitudes.

The viral clip has reignited conversations around child marriage, family planning, maternal health and gender bias in India.
