Ahmedabad, Sep 19: In a major development, the salary and allowances of Gujarat MLAs have been increased from Rs 70,000 per month to 1.16 lakh per month. Reports inform that MLAs of all parties have supported the motion in the state assembly. The hike will be effective from December 22, 2017, and lawmakers will be able to receive arrears. Reports informed that the daily allowances of the MLAs will increase to Rs 1,000 from Rs 200.

The Gujarat assembly on Wednesday passed a bill seeking to substantially hike the salaries and allowances of ministers and MLAs monthly salaries by Rs 45,000. The Gujarat assembly has 182 elected members; the most recent state election took place in December last year. Reports inform that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had bagged 99 seats. The BJP had won seven more than it needed for a simple majority, and 19 more than the tally of seats won by the Congress and allies.

In August, two bills seeking to increase the pay cheque of legislators and ministers were tabled in the Goa assembly. The bills seek an increase in the salaries and allowance of the members of the legislative assembly (MLAs) and ministers by almost 77%.
