Lucknow, July 14: A woman in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal was burnt to death by unidentified by miscreants on Saturday. The police said the perpetrators wanted to gangrape the victim but ended up setting her ablaze after she continuously resisted the sexual assault attempt.

An official, privy to the case, told news agency ANI that the woman was burnt alive as she resisted the gangrape attempt. A rigorous search operation has been launched to apprehend the accused at the earliest.

Family members and relatives of the deceased stage a sit-in in front of the police station in Sambhal seeking immediate justice.

The bereaved kin has been asked by the investigators to register an FIR. While a manhunt has been launched, early leads in the case would emerge after the autopsy report is submitted, a police official said.

“We have asked the family to file an FIR after which we’ll take action. Accused will be nabbed soon. Rest of the action will be taken after post-mortem report comes,” he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
