A neighborhood altercation over garbage disposal turned fatal in Maharashtra’s Sangli district, resulting in the death of a married couple after they were brutally attacked by their neighbor. The second victim, 45-year-old Mohan Nagappa Kesarekar, succumbed to severe injuries on Tuesday, August 18, while undergoing treatment at Miraj Civil Hospital. His wife, Manisha Kesarekar, 35, had died earlier from multiple stab wounds following the violent incident on August 15 in Vighnaharta Colony, situated in the Kupwad MIDC area.

According to police officials, the confrontation began on Saturday morning when Manisha noticed garbage dumped directly in front of their home and confronted their neighbor, 52-year-old Farid Abdul Shaikh. The verbal argument quickly escalated when Mohan stepped outside to mediate. Investigators stated that Shaikh went inside his home, retrieved a hammer and a knife, and launched a sudden assault on the couple. Mohan sustained critical head injuries from the hammer, while Manisha was stabbed repeatedly as she attempted to intervene and protect her husband. The couple's teenage daughter attempted to stop the assailant, who fled the scene shortly after on a bicycle. Both victims were rushed to the government hospital in Miraj, where Manisha succumbed to her injuries on Sunday evening, and Mohan remained in critical condition until his death on Tuesday.

Officers from the Kupwad MIDC Police Station apprehended the suspect within hours of the incident. Authorities confirmed that Shaikh, who lived alone and worked as a tile-layer, had a history of troublesome behavior in the area and ongoing disputes with the family. ‘The Staircase’-Inspired Murder Plot Fails As Delhi Police Crack Wife Killing Case.

Police have updated the charges against the suspect to a double murder under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The deceased couple, originally from Karnataka, had been working as construction workers in Sangli for over a decade and had moved into their newly built home only months prior. They are survived by their 17-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son.
