The elevator stalled at a private hotel located in the city's PMG area. Tharoor was visiting the venue to participate in the installation ceremony of the Rotary Club of Trivandrum East. According to hotel sources and emergency services, the lift came to a sudden halt on the sixth floor after an apparent technical error. When initial attempts by the hotel staff to clear the malfunction failed, authorities contacted the local emergency services. A team from the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services reached the spot within minutes. Using a specialized hydraulic spreader tool, the rescue personnel managed to pry open the elevator doors and evacuate those inside. The entire operation lasted approximately 20 minutes.
Speaking to the media shortly after his rescue, Tharoor assured well-wishers that everyone involved was unharmed. "The lift got stuck, we tried every means of getting out but nothing worked," Tharoor said. "We called the Fire and Rescue Services, they rescued us... Don't worry, we are all okay."
Following the incident, the Congress leader extended his gratitude to the rescue operations team by formally felicitating the Fire and Rescue Services personnel for their quick response time. Management at the hotel confirmed they have launched a full safety evaluation of their elevator systems to pinpoint the cause of the failure and prevent future mechanical issues. Following the rescue, Tharoor proceeded to attend his scheduled public commitments for the evening.
