Doctors and hospital staff were allegedly assaulted and threatened at Relief Hospital in Palghar after a dispute over the treatment bill of an injured Govinda escalated late Sunday night, September 6, according to a complaint and police. CCTV video from the hospital reportedly shows a receptionist being slapped and a woman employee being threatened when they attempted to intervene.
The dispute began when members of a Govinda troupe were handed a bill of INR 19,866 during the discharge of an injured participant following a Dahi Handi event. According to the hospital employee's complaint, Shiv Sena district chief Kundan Sankhe, city chief Rahul Gharat and others entered the emergency department and argued with medical staff. Dispute Over Govinda's Hospital Bill
The incident occurred past midnight on Sunday at Relief Hospital in Palghar. The dispute reportedly centred on the treatment costs of Govindas injured during a Dahi Handi celebration. The group objected to the INR 19,866 bill presented at the time of discharge.
A heated argument followed, with hospital staff alleging that the group verbally abused, threatened and assaulted personnel present in the emergency department.
According to the complaint lodged by a hospital employee, a receptionist who attempted to intervene was slapped. The alleged assault was captured by CCTV cameras installed at the hospital, according to the complaint and reports.
Hospital staff also alleged that one of the Sena workers threatened a woman employee who tried to intervene. The police are examining the CCTV footage as part of their investigation.
Mob Allegedly Entered ICU
Hospital staff alleged that some members of the group also entered the intensive care unit, a restricted area intended to limit contamination and protect patients. According to the allegations, a nurse in the ICU was threatened and the IV drip of an injured Govinda was removed.
The hospital staff further alleged that the injured man was then taken away from the hospital. These allegations are part of the complaint and remain subject to investigation.
17 Named In Police Case
Palghar police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Medical Services Protection Act. At least 17 individuals have been named in the case, including Shiv Sena district chief Kundan Sankhe, city chief Rahul Gharat and Rohit Gavit, son of local MLA Rajendra Gavit.
Police are scanning CCTV footage and examining other evidence to establish the sequence of events and the roles of those named in the complaint. Further investigation is underway.
Congress Calls Incident "Shameful"
Congress leader Atul Londhe Patil described the incident as "shameful". "This is hooliganism by Mahayuti politicians. They don't believe in law. In Palghar, they have beaten a receptionist. I am told even doctors were assaulted. It is unacceptable. When will there be accountability?" he told NDTV.
The allegations have also triggered concern within Palghar's medical community, where doctors and healthcare workers have repeatedly raised concerns about their safety following incidents of violence at hospitals.
The incident comes amid continuing concerns among medical professionals over assaults at healthcare facilities. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court denied bail to a Shiv Sena corporator who was arrested in July for hitting a woman doctor at a civic hospital in Thane.
Those who assault doctors are not entitled to bail, the court observed, while noting that such mob attacks can cause mental trauma. The Palghar case remains under investigation, with police examining CCTV footage and other evidence before determining the next course of action.
