Maharashtra: Shiv Sena Corporator Ramesh Mhatre Assaults Doctors and Nurses at Shastrinagar Hospital, Video Surfaces
Medical staff at Dombivli’s Shastrinagar Hospital launched a work boycott on Tuesday, July 7, after an alleged assault by Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre and others. The dispute erupted over a pregnant patient’s care. While emergency services remain active, doctors are demanding that the corporator be named in the FIR before resuming routine operations. The IMA has condemned the violence.
Routine medical services at the KDMC-run Shastrinagar Hospital remained suspended on Tuesday, July 7, as doctors and nurses launched an indefinite work boycott to protest the alleged assault of medical staff by Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre and his supporters. While non-emergency outpatient services are halted, the hospital is continuing to provide emergency care to patients.
The protest stems from a confrontation that occurred late Monday night, July 6, involving a pregnant patient, 33-year-old Priyanka Ugmale. According to hospital officials, the patient was diagnosed with two loops of the umbilical cord around the foetus, necessitating a lower segment caesarean section (LSCS). Dispute Over Patient Treatment
Medical staff reported that they anticipated the newborn might require Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) support. However, as the hospital’s NICU facility was at capacity, doctors began coordinating alternative arrangements for the baby's post-delivery care. Hospital sources stated that during this process, the patient's relatives contacted corporator Ramesh Mhatre. Upon his arrival, a heated argument reportedly broke out regarding the perceived delay in treatment. During the altercation, Mhatre and his supporters allegedly assaulted two doctors, including the attending gynaecologist, as well as three nurses. Following the incident, the patient was transferred to the KDMC-run Vasant Valley Maternity Hospital, where she underwent a successful caesarean section, and the newborn was admitted to the NICU.
Doctors Demand Legal Action
The incident has triggered a wave of anger among medical professionals across Kalyan-Dombivli. Doctors and staff at Shastrinagar and Rukminibai hospitals have staged a boycott, demanding that Mhatre be named as an accused in the First Information Report (FIR). Doctors and medical staff will not tolerate such attacks, said Shastrinagar Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Sadiya Pinjari. Staff members have further alleged that this is not the first time the corporator has been involved in such conduct at the facility. A delegation from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) met with KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goel on Tuesday to demand immediate intervention. The IMA has warned that if strict legal action against the accused is not initiated by Wednesday, private doctors across the twin city will join the protest by suspending their medical services in solidarity. As of Tuesday, hospital staff were continuing their agitation at the KDMC headquarters, insisting that authorities take stringent action against all those responsible for the violence.
