A massive landslide in Sikkim's Mangan district has partially blocked the Teesta River. Authorities said the river continues to flow normally and there is no immediate flood threat downstream, while vulnerable areas remain under monitoring.
A massive landslide in Sikkim's Mangan district has partially blocked the flow of the Teesta River, triggering concern among residents amid heavy rainfall in the region. The landslide occurred during the intervening night of September 5 and 6 near the Naga Forest area, opposite Theng Tunnel.
The landslide also affected the flow of the Chyakoong River. However, authorities said there is no immediate flood threat to downstream areas and urged residents to remain calm and rely only on official updates.
According to officials, water has accumulated in the affected stretch, but both the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers continue to flow. Ground assessments by police personnel at Chungthang and Theng found that the Teesta's flow remains normal at present. The incident has sparked concern on social media, particularly following the 2023 Teesta flash floods and recent reports of a glacier-related disaster in neighbouring Nepal. Officials, however, cautioned against spreading unverified claims about a possible major downstream flood. Darjeeling MP Raju Bista said he spoke to Sikkim Chief Secretary Ravindra Telang about the incident. According to Bista, the landslide has temporarily obstructed the Teesta's flow, although the river continues to flow normally at present.
Bista urged people living along the Teesta River to remain alert and take precautionary measures as the region continues to receive rainfall.
The Mangan district administration has alerted vulnerable areas in the lower belt as a precaution. Police and rescue personnel are closely monitoring water levels and the situation around the affected river stretch.
Authorities have advised residents and visitors to avoid approaching the Teesta and Chyakoong riverbanks in the affected area until the ground assessment is completed.
No deaths or injuries have been reported so far in connection with the landslide.
