Mumbai, December 1: Much the happiness of motorists, the repair work of the Sion flyover has been postponed for at least the next 20 days. Reports inform that closure of the 1.1-kilometre-long flyover, that was tentatively scheduled from December 1, will now be taken up around December 20. According to a report by DNA, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) that will carry out the repair work informed that the process of preparing traffic diversion plans is still underway.

Once the plan is ready, it will be submitted to the Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) for approval. It is only after the approval that the flyover will be shut for public use and vehicular movement. According to reports, an MSRDC had said that the tentative plan was to start repair work by taking blocks from December 1, 2018, the preparation of the traffic diversion plans is still in process. Reports inform that the total cost of repair on 2+2 lanes of the Sion flyover, which connects the Eastern & Central suburbs to the south of the city, is around Rs 6 crore. The repair work of the Sion flyover consists of changing of bearings and expanding the joints. The MSRDC has already appointed a contractor for the repair work.

According to reports, the flyover that was constructed in the late 1990s and witnesses around 15,000 vehicles plying on it regularly. Once the flyover is shut from mid-December, motorists will have to use the road below it. Sion Flyover To Remain Shut For Two Months For Repair Work.

Earlier this year, the Delisle Bridge outside Lower Parel station in Mumbai was shut by the Western Railway and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation after it was declared not fit for use. Since the Delisle Bridge is shut, the closure of Sion flyover will add to the woes of commuters. Hence, a concrete traffic diversion plan is required to address the inconvenience that will be caused to thousands of commuters on a daily basis.
