Sitapur Police Say 3 Taken in Custody

Teenager Went Missing On August 11

According to the information provided by the family, the girl went missing from home around 4 pm on August 11 in Sahroi village, under the Kotwali Dehat police station area of Sitapur.

The family named Mohammad Ilyas, Raheem and Salman alias Arman as suspects and approached the police. A search operation was subsequently launched for the missing teenager.

On August 14, the girl's body was found hanging from a tree near a shrine close to the village. The discovery triggered concern in the area and raised questions about the police response between the time the girl was reported missing and the recovery of her body.

A post-mortem examination was conducted. According to the available information, the post-mortem report listed hanging as the cause of death. Police, however, are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the death and have said that no possible angle will be overlooked.

Three Accused Taken Into Custody

Police have taken the three people named in the case into custody and are questioning them.

Officials said the investigation is being conducted on the basis of forensic and scientific evidence. Further legal action will be taken according to the facts and evidence emerging during the probe.

The family's allegation that the girl was abducted, raped and murdered has not been established by the investigation and remains an allegation at this stage.

Police Action After Questions Over Handling

The police department has also initiated action against its own personnel following questions over the handling of the missing-person case. The outpost in-charge has been suspended with immediate effect. A departmental inquiry has also been ordered against the station in-charge.

Officials have said responsibility will be fixed if negligence is established. The investigation is therefore examining two aspects: the circumstances surrounding the teenager's death and the police response after she was reported missing.

Chandra Shekhar Aazad Questions Police Response

Lok Sabha MP and Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad raised the issue on X, questioning the Uttar Pradesh government's handling of the case and seeking action against those responsible.

On Independence Day, Aazad wrote: "On the occasion of Independence Day, I am writing this with a deeply anguished heart alongside this video, addressing Chief Minister @myogiadityanath ji, that this is not the body of a 16-year-old girlтАФit's Uttar Pradesh's law and order hanging from a tree."

He described the discovery of Sabreen Bano's body as "extremely heartbreaking and alarming" and said the family had informed police after she went missing.

Aazad alleged that the family informed police on August 11 and again on August 12, but that no action was taken until August 14, when pressure was mounted by workers from the Bhim Army and Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshiram). These claims about the police response are allegations by the family and Aazad and are part of the departmental inquiry now underway.

Demand For Fair Investigation

Aazad said the family had alleged that their daughter was abducted, raped and then murdered, calling it an extremely serious allegation requiring a fair and high-level investigation.

He questioned what action police took between August 11 and August 14 and demanded that the Uttar Pradesh government investigate alleged police negligence.

Aazad also called for action against responsible police personnel, the immediate arrest of the accused and justice for Sabreen Bano. Police, meanwhile, have already taken three accused into custody, according to the latest available report. The investigation and forensic evidence will determine the next course of action.

The Sitapur case now involves both the investigation into the teenager's death and an internal examination of the police response to her disappearance. While the three detained suspects are being questioned, investigators are expected to establish the sequence of events leading to the girl's death and determine whether any further criminal or departmental action is warranted.

The suspended outpost in-charge and departmental inquiry against the station in-charge underscore the police department's response to allegations of negligence.
