New Delhi, June 1: The new Foreign Minister and former foreign secretary Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, in his first tweet on Saturday, after taking charge of Ministry of External Affairs on Friday said that he was "proud to follow in the footsteps" of predecessor and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushma Swaraj. Thanking everyone for their good wishes, the 64-year-old diplomat said, "My first tweet. Thank you all for the best wishes! Honoured to be given this responsibility. Proud to follow on the footsteps of @SushmaSwaraj ji." Notably, Jaishankar is the first foreign secretary to head the Ministry of External Affairs as a minister. Considered an expert in the United States and China, the new EAM's move will be keenly watched how he deals with the neighbouring country Pakistan.

He was one of the newly appointed ministers who took oath on May 30 at a glittering ceremony in New Delhi with Prime Minister Narendra Modi elected for the second term with a landslide victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.
