Supreme Court seeks strict action
The Supreme Court said attacks on doctors could not be taken lightly and emphasised that people accused of such offences should face prompt legal action.
The observations follow the court's earlier remarks that those who attack doctors do not deserve bail. Last week, the apex court said the Bombay High Court was justified in taking suo motu cognisance of an alleged assault on doctors at a municipal hospital in Thane district and in staying bail granted to an accused Shiv Sena corporator. Recent incidents raise concern
The issue has gained attention following several alleged incidents involving political workers and hospital staff in Maharashtra. In one recent case, police booked 17 people, including Shiv Sena leaders, following an alleged altercation and assault on staff at a private hospital in Palghar. The incident reportedly followed a dispute over the treatment of a member of a Govinda troupe who was injured during Dahi Handi celebrations.
The Supreme Court's latest observations underline the need to ensure the safety of doctors and other healthcare workers while they carry out their duties.
Court proceedings continue
The apex court's remarks add to the ongoing scrutiny of cases involving assaults on medical professionals in Maharashtra. The court has made it clear that political affiliation should not shield anyone accused of attacking doctors and that authorities must take appropriate action in accordance with the law.
