Hyderabad, November 19: A man from Telangana gave triple-talaq to his wife for not giving birth to a baby boy. According to reports, the man also had a relationship with another woman. Mehraj Begum, the victim, demanded justice for herself. Several cases of triple talaq continue to surface even after the Narendra Modi passed a law which criminalises the practice of giving instant divorce. In a similar case, a woman named Rukhsana Begum was allegedly given triple talaq by her husband for having crooked teeth. Her husband used to abuse her for this.

Triple talaq was made illegal in India on August 1, 2019. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 passed on July 26, 2019 by both the houses of Parliament. The government first introduced the Act to Parliament in 2017 to criminalise triple talaq. Several opposition parties including Rashtriya Janata Dal, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, Biju Janata Dal, AIADMK, Congress and All India Muslim League opposed the bill.
