Thane, Sep 3:  While people prepared for the birth of Lord Krishna with great gusto, a group of men on Saturday robbed cash, gold and silver worth Rs 38 lakh in Thane on the eve of Janmashtami. Soon after the incident came to light, the Thane Police swung into action and nabbed five burglars. According to a report by TOI, the Krishna temple, where the theft took place, is a century-old temple located at the Jambhli market area in the heart of Thane. The incident triggered a fear among people in the area as the market has several jewellery shops and temples.

Reports inform that the incident came to light on Sunday morning following which the Police launched a search operation. The Police nabbed five men and recovered the stolen articles in time for the Krishna Janmashtami celebrations. According to a report by TOI, Police informed that the Shri Gowardhan Nath ni Haveli, which is very popular among the Gujarati as well as the Marwadi community members, attracts thousands of devotees on Janmashtami.

According to details by the Police, the temple’s caretakers had taken all the jewellery out on Saturday to prepare for the Janmashtami celebrations and left around 10.30 pm on Saturday. On Sunday, when they opened the temple door, they found the gold and silver jewellery missing and everything else lying scattered. The report informs that the temple’s rear door was broken open. Soon after, the police were alerted about the incident. The CCTV was also damaged, and its wires snapped by the burglars.

Before the case was cracked, a senior police officer said the robbery seemed to have been meticulously planned. The officer said the gang had fled with 900 grams gold worth Rs 22.5 lakh, 20 kgs silver worth Rs 7 lakh and Rs 9 lakh cash— totally Rs 38.5 lakh. The Thane Nagar police and the crime branch started investigations and cracked the case within 12 hours and all the stolen materials were recovered.
