The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is ramping up food safety inspections across the state, with roadside Chinese food stalls and eateries now facing increased scrutiny over ingredient quality, storage practices, and overall hygiene. The enforcement initiative follows a series of public complaints regarding popular street food vendors operating in cities and towns throughout the state.

The upcoming inspections form part of a broader statewide campaign led by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe to target food adulteration, counterfeit goods, and regulatory non-compliance. Why Maharashtra Hotels Are Engaging Former FDA & FSSAI Officials Amid Tukaram Mundhe's Crackdown.

Scope and Focus of Upcoming Inspections

Under the directive, FDA officials will evaluate multiple operational standards at roadside stalls and food outlets, reports Moneycontrol. The checks are designed to ensure compliance with existing food safety regulations rather than enforcing blanket bans on specific ingredients or food colourings.

The inspections will specifically examine:

  • Ingredient quality and safety compliance
  • Food handling and preparation methods
  • On-site hygiene and sanitation practices
  • Proper food storage conditions
  • Valid licenses and mandatory registrations

“Following public complaints, we will soon examine the quality of food served and ingredients used at these stalls,” Mundhe stated during a recent interaction in Pune, adding that he intends to personally review street food conditions from a safety perspective.

Broader Enforcement Drive and Public Participation

The focus on Chinese food vendors coincides with a wider, intensified enforcement drive initiated by the Maharashtra FDA in recent months. The department has stepped up raids targeting food adulteration, substandard products, and illegal substances such as gutkha. Speaking at an event in Pune, Mundhe emphasised that the department maintains a zero-tolerance policy regarding public health risks. "Adulterated food, poisonous liquor and substandard food products are putting people’s health at risk. The FDA has started a toll-free number for complaints and is receiving an enthusiastic response from citizens. Inspections are being conducted as per rules everywhere, from the High Court canteen to government offices," Mundhe said.

The commissioner highlighted the role of consumer participation in maintaining oversight, noting that every grievance submitted through official portals will be reviewed. “Our priority is to ensure that citizens get safe, quality food. Public participation is equally important, and every complaint received through the portal will be examined,” he added. FDA Suspends Licences of Punjab Grill, South India Dosa Corner, 3 Others in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai.

Addressing Career Tenure and Bureaucratic Transfers

During his remarks, Mundhe also addressed questions concerning the frequent administrative transfers he has experienced throughout his career. Over more than two decades as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Mundhe has been transferred over two dozen times. Reflecting on his tenure, the senior bureaucrat maintained a positive outlook regarding administrative mobility. “Frequent transfers do not trouble me. In fact, change is an integral part of progress. The more transfers I have, the more opportunities I get to bring about positive changes,” he said.
