Investigating authorities in Bhopal have entered a critical phase of interrogation with advocate Samarth Singh, who is currently serving a seven-day police remand following his arrest in connection with the death of his wife, Twisha Sharma. Sharma, who was pregnant, was found hanging at the couple’s Bhopal residence on May 12, just five months after their marriage. The case has drawn intense scrutiny following allegations from the victim's family regarding severe mental torture and dowry harassment.

Interrogation Reveals Marital Discord and Conflicting Claims

During a two-hour interrogation session on Saturday, May 23, Singh reportedly claimed that his wife's behaviour had altered significantly after her pregnancy was confirmed on April 17. His statements to investigators contrast sharply with assertions from the victim's family, who allege that Singh's persistent questioning regarding the paternity of the unborn child caused her immense emotional distress. Twisha Sharma’s Final Rites Today in Bhopal After 2nd Autopsy by AIIMS Delhi Team.

According to police sources, Singh told interrogators that upon returning from the hospital on April 17, Sharma stated she wanted to return to her parental home and could not sustain a domestic lifestyle. She flew to Delhi that evening to stay at her family's residence in Noida. Following persuasion from her family, Sharma returned to Bhopal on April 23, accompanied by her mother and brother. However, domestic tensions reportedly persisted. Singh claimed he had purchased travel tickets to Bengaluru for April 24, which Sharma ultimately declined, stating instead that she wished to visit her brother in Ajmer, Rajasthan. Singh told investigators that this disagreement sparked an argument hours before she was found dead.

Text Messages and Last Contact Detail Hostile Environment

Evidence collected by investigators paints a different picture of the household environment. Text messages exchanged between Sharma and her mother detailed a hostile atmosphere at her in-laws' residence. Sharma made repeated requests to her parents to remove her from the home, at one point messaging, "Mera dum ghut raha hai maa (I am feeling suffocated, mother)." On the night of her death, Sharma contacted her mother at 10:05 PM to describe her situation. "During the conversation, she abruptly disconnected the call after her husband entered the room," said her brother, Major Harshit Sharma, an officer in the Indian Army. "Repeated attempts were thereafter made by our family to contact her, Samarth, and her mother-in-law, but no one responded," he added. Hours later, Sharma’s mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, a retired judge, notified the family of Twisha's death.

Legal Developments and Suspect Demeanour

Singh was arrested in Jabalpur on Friday shortly before he intended to surrender, following the rejection of his anticipatory bail plea. Eyewitnesses inside the courtroom during his initial appearance noted that Singh appeared entirely composed, standing upright and watching the proceedings with a calm and confident demeanour, showing no visible signs of nervousness or remorse. In response to the criminal charges, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has suspended Singh from legal practice with immediate effect, stating that the allegations severely damage the dignity and public image of the legal profession.

Meanwhile, Giribala Singh has been granted pre-arrest bail by the court. However, investigators have noted that she is currently accused of ignoring police notices and failing to cooperate fully with the ongoing probe. Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar confirmed that strict legal action will be taken against any individuals found to have sheltered the accused while he was evading law enforcement. Supreme Court Takes Suo Motu Cognisance of Twisha Sharma Death Case, Special Bench to Hear Matter on May 25.

High Court Orders Second Post-Mortem

Sharma, originally a resident of Noida, married Singh in December 2025. Following the initial findings, the Madhya Pradesh High Court intervened in the matter, issuing directives for advanced forensic evaluation. A specialised medical team consisting of four senior doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, is scheduled to arrive in Bhopal today, May 24, to conduct a second, independent post-mortem examination of Sharma's body to definitively establish the circumstances leading to her death.
