Workers across India spend an average of INR 785 per month commuting to fixed workplaces, with urban employees incurring significantly higher travel costs of INR 1,044 compared to INR 612 for their rural counterparts, according to a landmark government report. The findings are part of the first-ever National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The comprehensive survey maps daily and long-distance mobility patterns nationwide.

Workforce Mobility and Commuting Costs

The survey defines a qualifying travel trip as any movement covering a distance of more than one kilometre, reports PIB. Data shows that 57.6 per cent of workers travel over 1 km to reach their workplaces. Significant economic and demographic disparities mark daily transit expenditures:

  • Gender Disparity: Male workers spend an average of INR 835 per month on fixed-workplace commutes, contrasting sharply with INR 533 per month for female workers.
  • Primary Modes of Transport: Two-wheelers stand out as the single largest primary mode of transport for workforce mobility across India, utilised by 52.3 per cent of urban workers and 37.1 per cent of rural commuters.
  • Mass Transit Hubs: While mass transit options like metros, monorails, suburban rail, and trams account for 5 per cent of urban worker commutes nationally, adoption surges drastically in regional hubs such as Maharashtra (20.7 per cent), West Bengal (16.5 per cent), and Delhi (14.4 per cent).

In terms of duration, over four-fifths of workers reach their fixed workplaces within 30 minutes (86.1 per cent rural; 79.3 per cent urban), while 13.7 per cent spend between 30 and 60 minutes in transit.

Student Travel Patterns and Institution Access

For students aged 6 years and above, daily commutes form a vital segment of domestic mobility, with nearly two-thirds undertaking daily journeys of at least 1 km to educational facilities (65.6 per cent in rural areas; 68.1 per cent in urban areas).

  • Expenditure: Urban students spend an average of Rs 617 per month on institutional travel, while rural students average Rs 361 per month.
  • Modes of Transit: Walking remains the primary mode for 37 per cent of school students, followed closely by buses at 29.5 per cent and bicycles at 15.8 per cent. Auto-rickshaws account for 10.5 per cent overall - rising to 14.4 per cent in urban sectors - while two-wheelers make up 6.7 per cent nationally.
  • Time Efficiency: Nearly 9 in 10 students complete their journey to educational institutions in under 30 minutes, maintaining an average one-way travel time of 23 minutes.

Overnight Journeys and Intercity Travel

When analysing household overnight trips, public transport and railways dominate long-distance travel choices. Buses account for 55.8 per cent of overnight journeys, followed by inter-city railways at 17.7 per cent, cars at 15.1 per cent, and two-wheelers at 8.8 per cent. Rail usage for overnight trips shows a notable urban skew, chosen by 22.7 per cent of urban households compared to roughly 14 per cent among rural households.
