Chamoli, July 18: Not waiting for the authorities, the villagers in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand has built a makeshift bridge over Chuflagad River using tree trunks.  Amidst heavy rains in the area, a part of the original bridge was swept away, due to which students from the village faced a lot of trouble to cross the river to reach their schools.  So they used a rope ladder to climb a hillock to attend their class.  Apart from the footbridge, a rest house was also swept away in the gushing waters of the Yamuna in the Yamunotri.

Uttarakhand has been witnessing heavy downpour this season. A dozen houses, ten shops and six vehicles were swept away during the heavy rains. The cloudburst hit in Tharali and Ghat areas of Chamoli district early on Monday, in which seven houses were washed away in Maukh Malla village of Serabagad area of Chamoli.

As per reports, residents near the Yamuna in Janki Chatti were shifted to safer places by the police and the district administration. Several rivers in the state are flowing above the normal mark. The Yamunotri-leg of the annual Char Dham pilgrimage has also been halted due to heavy rains. On July 11, seven people died in the state capital, Dehradun due to heavy rains.
