Jacob Bethell Birthday Special: Celebrating the Rise of England's Young All-Rounder As He Turns 23

Jacob Bethell, the dynamic English left-handed all-rounder, celebrates his 23rd birthday today, October 23, 2026. Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, Bethell's burgeoning career has seen a meteoric rise, culminating in him becoming England's youngest-ever T20 International captain and achieving the unique feat of scoring maiden centuries in all three international formats. Since making his senior international debut in September 2024, Bethell has quickly established himself as a prominent figure in English cricket, showcasing his explosive batting and handy slow left-arm orthodox bowling across Tests, One Day Internationals, and Twenty20 Internationals.

Early Promise and County Foundations

Bethell's cricketing journey began in Barbados before he moved to the United Kingdom at the age of 12 on a scholarship to Rugby School. His talent was undeniable from an early age, earning him the Player of the Tournament award in the West Indies U-15 competition in 2017. He joined Warwickshire's youth pathway, signing a professional contract with the county in 2021. His performances for Warwickshire quickly drew attention, with former England captain Ian Bell describing him as the "best 17-year-old" he had ever seen.

Bethell represented England at the U19 level, notably as joint-captain in 2021 and vice-captain during the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where his blistering 88 runs off just 42 balls in the quarter-final against South Africa highlighted his immense potential.

International Breakthrough and Record-Breaking Achievements

His senior international debut arrived in September 2024 with a T20I against Australia. Just over a year later, in September 2025, Bethell made history by becoming England's youngest-ever T20I captain at 21 years and 329 days, leading the side against Ireland. The year 2025 also saw him register his maiden ODI century, an impressive 110 runs against South Africa.

Bethell's remarkable run continued into 2026, where he scored his maiden Test and first-class century with 154 runs in the fifth Ashes Test against Australia in Sydney. This achievement made him the first male cricketer to score his maiden centuries in first-class, List A, and T20 international matches, and also the youngest player ever to achieve centuries in all three international formats (Test, ODI, and T20I). He also showcased his T20 prowess with a century (105) against India in the 2026 T20 World Cup semi-final.

Career Snapshot

Jacob Bethell's journey has taken him through various domestic leagues, playing for Warwickshire, Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred (where he was appointed captain for the 2026 season, though he was later ruled out due to a knee injury, with Donovan Ferreira stepping in to lead the team), Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL, and Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League.
