The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of extremely heavy rainfall in several parts of the country, with widespread showers expected across north, west, central and eastern India as the southwest monsoon remains active. The weather department has cautioned that intense rain over the next 24 hours could lead to waterlogging, flash floods, landslides and disruption to transport in vulnerable areas, as reported by TOI.
Heavy Rain Alert for Multiple Regions
According to the IMD, extremely heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, while heavy to very heavy rain has also been forecast for Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and several northeastern states. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also expected in many of these regions. Mumbai Weather Forecast & Update for Today, Sunday, 05 July 2026: Expect Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms, High of 27°C.
In southern India, Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and parts of Andhra Pradesh are also expected to receive widespread rainfall, although the intensity is forecast to be lower than in western and central India.
Monsoon Conditions Remain Active
The IMD said the active southwest monsoon, supported by favourable weather systems over the region, continues to bring widespread rainfall across large parts of the country. The current weather pattern is expected to sustain above-normal rainfall activity over western, central and northern India over the next few days. Several states have already witnessed heavy rainfall in recent days, prompting local administrations to strengthen disaster response measures and monitor flood-prone areas. Mumbai: Waterlogging Witnessed at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Due to Heavy Rainfall.
The weather department has advised residents in affected regions to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and remain alert for possible flooding, landslides and traffic disruptions. People living in low-lying areas and hilly districts have been urged to follow advisories issued by local authorities and emergency management agencies.
After a relatively subdued start to the southwest monsoon in parts of the country, rainfall activity has intensified significantly over the past week. The latest IMD forecast indicates that active monsoon conditions are likely to continue, bringing widespread rain to several regions and providing relief from high temperatures while also increasing the risk of weather-related disruptions.
