According to family members, Hasmat was struck repeatedly with blunt and sharp weapons, including a shovel, spade, hammer, and crowbar. He sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Durgapur Subdistrict Hospital, where he succumbed during treatment. The victim, who primarily lived and worked in neighboring Birbhum district, had been staying at his in-laws' home for a few days prior to the attack. The victim's family claims the assault was a deliberate, coordinated strike engineered by his wife and her brother to gain control of property. The accused in-laws, however, have denied the murder allegations, telling authorities that Hasmat initiated the violence and that they acted strictly in self-defense. The body was transferred from Durgapur Subdistrict Hospital to Asansol District Hospital for a formal post-mortem examination. Raspreet Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) for the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, confirmed that a formal First Information Report (FIR) has been registered based on the victim's family's complaint, and an active investigation is underway.
