What Has Changed on the EPFO Portal?
Following the upgrade, EPFO has revised how subscribers access key services on its online platform.
The major changes include:
- UAN activation through the EPFO portal has been discontinued
- Direct UAN allotment is no longer available on the portal
- Both services have now been moved to the UMANG app
- Aadhaar-based Face Authentication is now mandatory for UAN activation and allotment
- UAN retrieval has been simplified for users who forget their number
UAN Services Now Only via UMANG App
Subscribers can no longer activate or generate a new Universal Account Number through the EPFO Unified Member Portal.

How to Activate UAN on UMANG
- Download the UMANG app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store
- Open EPFO Services
- Select "UAN Activation" under "UAN Services Through Face Auth."
- Complete Aadhaar Face Authentication and follow instructions
How to Generate a New UAN
- Open the UMANG app
- Select EPFO Services
- Click "UAN Allotment and Activation"
- Complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication
- Follow on-screen instructions to generate UAN
What If You Already Have an EPF Account?
Employees who already have an EPF account but do not have a UAN can still obtain one.
They are required to verify their registered mobile number, submit member details and complete authentication. Once verified, a UAN will be generated and linked to the existing EPF account.
For users who have forgotten their UAN, the upgraded system allows retrieval by entering a registered mobile number, uploading identity or address proof and completing OTP verification.
Death Claim Filing Still Available
While UAN-related services have moved to the UMANG app, EPFO has retained the facility for filing death claims on its Unified Member Portal.
Beneficiaries must ensure they have:
- Aadhaar-linked mobile number
- Bank account details
- Death certificate of the member
- Cancelled cheque or bank passbook
- Date of birth proof, where applicable
EPFO has also specified that documents must be uploaded in PDF format, each under 2 MB, with file names free of spaces.
Why EPFO Made These Changes
According to EPFO, the changes are part of a broader system modernisation exercise involving database consolidation and software upgrades aimed at improving service delivery.
The organisation has also cautioned that claim processing and online requests may take slightly longer during the initial two-week stabilisation period. Members have been advised to avoid repeated submissions and multiple login attempts during peak hours.
